This balloon experiment demonstrates how galaxies in our universe are moving farther away from each other. ⭐️🎈

In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that the farther a galaxy is from Earth, the faster it appears to move away from us.

Now scientists have found that the universe may be expanding about 10% faster than expected. 🤯 Which confirms there are so many things scientists don’t understand about forces causing the expansion like dark matter and dark energy.

So what is dark matter? Scientists estimate that everything we know — stars, planets, people, animals — makes up only about 5% of the universe. The rest is mostly dark matter and dark energy.

Space is weird… and we’re still figuring it out. ✨

(And don’t panic — if the universe expanded at the size of a football field, it would still take over 1 million years to grow by just 1 centimeter.)

You can buy instant snow or cut into a clean diaper for this super absorbent polymer called sodium polyacrylate, that traps water molecules and expands rapidly. Place at the bottom of a clear container for a little science magic 🪄

Easy experiments with a big wow factor are one of my favorite ways to keep curiosity growing all summer! 🙌

This has got to be THE easiest most satisfying experiment ever (and one that’s perfect for Maycember learning!)

Once the water starts flowing, gravity keeps it moving through the straw. Experiment with different straw lengths to see what water level the water will stop flowing at. 💦

Why does the world need more STEM chapter books with smart female heroes?

Girls interest in STEM can drop by nearly 50% between ages 8-15! 😳

By middle school, many girls are already less likely than boys to describe themselves as “smart” in science - even when grades are equal.

80% of STEM professionals say early encouragement matters in whether kids pursue science later in life.

That’s why myself - along with my STEM friends - write (and often times self-publish) STEM adventures books.
