Flying Toilet Paper Trick 🧻✨

What’s the science? Fluid - like air - that moves at a higher speed creates a lower pressure. When blowing across the top of the toilet paper, the air underneath is at a higher pressure causing the toilet paper to lift. Blow a higher speed of air across the top of the toilet paper with a hair dryer - and the paper goes flying!

💥Crush a Can with Science…but how?

What’s the science? If you create steam in an aluminum can - by boiling a small amount of water in it - then steam will fill the can and displace the air inside the can. Then, if you turn the steam filled can upside down in ice water, the steam will quickly condense into water and the outside air pressure will crush the can!

🔥Relighting a Flame🔥

What’s the science? It’s all about the fire triangle - for a flame you need heat, oxygen, and fuel.

When you mix baking soda and vinegar, it produces carbon dioxide which displaces oxygen - causing the flame to snuff out - leaving a few embers burning.

When you mix hydrogen peroxide and yeast the reaction produces oxygen which has a rich enough concentration to reignite the burning embers into a flame! 🔥

What’s the science? It’s air pressure! The reason why the pingpong ball appears to float in mid-air is because the higher airflow from the hairdryer creates a lower pressure than the surrounding air. This lower air pressure causes the pingpong to want to stay floating in the lower pressure!

✨Magic Cocoa Powder...or science?

(It's science 😉) Hot chocolate mix contains cocoa powder that is hydrophobic. When submerged in milk, the starch molecules absorb water while the cocoa repels it - creating a shell around the powder. When poked with a toothpick, the milk runs off! (This demonstration does not work with 100% cocoa powder because it won’t easily get wet!)

🔥Candle Conservation of Mass🔥

What’s the science? Candles are made of wax and when lit, some of the wax melts into liquid, while some wax vaporizes and becomes part of the smoke. Conservation of mass is that mass is neither created or destroyed by a chemical reaction. So when a second flame is present, it will light the vaporized wax back down to the original wick.

(Tip: For better results, let the candle burn for a while. And trick candles are the best candles!)
