It is 92°F in our neck of the southeast Texas woods. So when browsing through our local craft store this morning, we ran across ultraviolet color changing glue! And of course what do you do with cool glue…. you make slime with it!
What you need: Color Changing Elmer’s Glue (here), contact solution, baking soda, disposable cup and spoon.
What you do:
- Pour Elmer’s glue in a disposable cup
- Put 1/2 Tbsp baking soda in bowl and mix thoroughly
- Put 1-1/4 Tbsp of contact solution in bowl and mix
- Knead the slime with your hands. Add a squirt of contact solution if too sticky
- Head outside to check it out!
What’s the science in slime? Contact solution is derived from a boron compound called sodium borate. This compound is the linking agent that links the glue molecules together making a polymer. The linked glue molecules trap moisture to form oozy amazing slime!
What’s the science in ultraviolet color change? This Elmer’s glue is specially formulated with a UV pigment that is sensitive to ultraviolet rays that can be found in sunlight.
My kids will always love slime and slime that can change colors will keep them entertained for hours.
