October really is the best month for science – especially the kind of science that you can touch and get totally grossed out on. Who doesn’t remember reaching into mystery boxes as a kid to feel “brains”, “intestines”, and “peeled-grape eyeballs”?
So here are 4 spooky sensory science ideas for that you can add to your Halloween this year with things found right there in your kitchen laboratory.🦇
#1 Slime: Either you love it or you can’t stand it – but hands down – kids still love slime. Mix up a mess of slime with these super easy recipes.
Pro tip: If you pass out slime on Halloween night – be sure to store it for kids in a sealed Zip Loc bag or their candy might get ‘slimed’! 😬
#2 Biology “Body Parts”: Want to gross out Trick or Treaters straight from a biology lab? Place a few tomato hearts, cauliflower brains, and spaghetti intestines in covered bowls and have them guess what they are.
Pro tip #1: Instead of peeled grapes I used these water beads for eyes.
Pro tip #2: The key to peeling a tomato is boiling it first for about 5 minutes, letting it cool, then the skin will come right off! Voila! A heart!
Pro Tip #3: Be sure to include a giant bottle of hand sanitizer with a few fingers and spiders and label it “body fluid” for the ultimate “sanitized” gross out.😅
#3 Ooze: Some of my favorite reactions from Halloween last year was this oozy Elephant Toothpaste in a jack-o-lantern.
Pro Tip: Elephant Toothpaste uses concentrated hydrogen peroxide so do a Kid Safe Monster Toothpaste instead using regular hydrogen peroxide so everyone can join in touching the oozy fun!
#4 Bubbles: We had the most fun with this Steve Spangler Boo Bubbles kit. Dry ice and bubble solution is a ton of sensory fun.
Pro Tip: Dry ice bubbles tend to cling to regular balloons so we had fun dropping our Boo Bubbles directly on them to observe.
We know you will be the ‘hit of the land’ if you try out these sensory science ideas this Halloween! 🦇🎃
