If you haven’t let your kids experiment with oobleck yet, now is the time. It’s incredibly easy to make and it’s great for all ages. It is an amazing sensory for little kids and a great way to show fluid properties to your older kids.
So what makes it so awesome? Oobleck is a Non-Newtonian fluid. And what the heck does that mean? It means that oobleck is a liquid and a solid. You can pour it and you can ball it up. It’s sticky and it’s smooth.
Curious yet? Mix up your own batch and see for yourself!
Here’s the recipe:
- 1 cup of water
- 2 cups of corn starch
- food coloring
I have to warn you though, it is a bit messy. So we took the oobleck outside and mixed it in plastic containers. I gave the kids spoons and cups and they had a great time just stirring it, pouring it through sand toys, and feeling it with their hands.
After about 15 minutes I figured we had enough sensory fun and I started to clean it up. (Because let’s face it – it was everywhere!)
Then something happened…
My daughter wasn’t through playing with it, she had other plans.
She took her tub of oobleck, some construction paper, and a flower stem and started using the oobleck as ink! I have to admit I was impressed by her creativity. She discovered her very own “oobleck writing”!
Next time you think an experiment is done and you’re ready to clean up…
Let her keep exploring. Give her access to other forms of media like paper, glitter, stickers and things out in nature. You’ll be amazed at what she’ll do to make the experiment her own and take it to new levels.
I hope you have an amazing time trying oobleck for yourself! Let the kids explore science experiments a little longer than you would and maybe they’ll stumble on a new discovery!
