As I reflect back on She Loves Science over the past 10 years, I realize that long gone are my days of frequent long blog posts that reflect on our life, parenting, and sharing my love of science. I would say this sharing of science in written form stopped about the time my oldest started middle school and around the same time of the falling off of social media likes, views, and interactions.
Despite the fickleness of social media – I realize now that through all of that early blogging – I discovered my love of writing. So much so that over 5 years, I published a series of chapter books for kids ages 9-12 years old.
This year, to keep up with the times, I rolled up my sleeves and embraced sharing science through short (silent) and quick Instagram videos, and to my surprise, discovered my teen and tween children actually really liked that form of learning science. (And they think their old mom still has some amount of “cool” left in her ;-))
So, despite how I share my love of science – I realize today on 12.31.2024 that one thing hasn’t changed for me and my love of science – and that is my curiosity. It is the exact same sentiment of the blog post I penned 10 years ago about enjoying science like a 4 year old.
Today, I realize that enjoying science looks a lot different to a 4 year old than a 14 year old. Now we are experimenting with bees for science fair projects, googling ways to use her amazing Soprano 1 voice to crack glass, and volunteering together to support her love of rescue animals and veterinary science. My son and younger daughter love that I continue host neighborhood Halloween Science Parties – something that I will continue doing as long as they let me! 😉
What a ride it has been and She Loves Science keeps me motivated to search for ways to show my kids science in our home and in the world through family trips, museum visits, and of course neat New Year science experiments.
And life has taught me that that old saying is really true – what goes around comes around – and that is why I am finishing up the prequel of my Halley Harper series to be published in 2025 about Halley’s Comet – a comet that keeps coming around ever 76 years. I can’t wait to finish it and share it with you.
So as we say farewell 2024, I’m going to say hello again to this long form “blog” writing here on She Loves Science as my way of battling back against the social media algorithm – the views, the likes, the ever-changing landscape of internet sharing.
Writing is the best way I have found of stretching my writing muscles and I’m going to start again in 2025. Flannery O’Conner said it best, “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.”
So in 2025, I will RECLAIM that same old curiosity of science and writing by returning to long form posting here regularly on SheLovesScience.com. I hope you join me too…and don’t worry I will continue to EMBRACE change and keep posting those short quick Instagram videos because well, they are just fun to do.😉
Happy New Year! Here’s to discovering that the ‘new you’ for the New Year might just be the “old you” with a new perspective.
