In first grade my daughter told us she wanted to be the first astronaut to go to Mars. She also said she wanted to raise lambs and be a farmer. Needless to say she has almost 60 stuffed lambs and we take her to a farm with sheep any chance we get. But I wasn’t quite sure what to do to encourage her dreams of becoming an astronaut…until I read about Mae Jemison.
What I love about Mae Jemison is that she isn’t just an astronaut. She is a dancer, a chemical engineer, an author, a doctor, a teacher, an actress… She is an amazing role model for our creative science loving girls.
This Mae Jemison bookis beautifully illustrated and my 8 year old loves it. Her eyes just lit up when she read all about Mae’s creative adventures and accomplishments. She realized she can grow up loving lambs, art, and space all at the same time!
“Science and art are not the flip sides to the coin but manifestations of the same thing. Science and art are avatars of human creativity.” – Mae Jemison
And the perfect thing to pair with reading about Mae Jemison is this No-Sew glow in the dark pillow found here on Go Science Girls. We love snuggling up with it and reading all about going into space.
