Everything about this pandemic is tough. There are some weeks that feel like a giant vacation and other weeks where tough back-to-school decisions have to be made. There are some weeks that I feel like I’ve got life under control and other weeks that feel like chaos. So when life gives you lemons…. well you know how the saying goes. And I definitely think every day, for the rest of 2020, should call for magical color changing lemonade. Here’s how you can make it too!
What you need: lemonade frozen concentrate (We used Minute Maid ) and Butterfly Pea herbal tea (found on Amazon here)
What you do:
- Follow directions to steep tea in boiling water until it reaches a medium to dark blue color
- Follow directions to make frozen lemonade from concentrate
- Pour half a glass of lemonade and slowly pour butterfly pea tea into lemonade
- Be prepared for an amazing color change!
What is the science: Butterfly pea tea contains a compound called anthocyanin which acts as a natural pH indicator. When in the presence of an acid (low pH), the anthocyanin will turn pink. When it is in the presence of a base (high pH) anthocyanin is blue. My fellow STEM blogger Left Brain Craft Brain has an amazing post here along with a fun book to pair with your science-y drink! She even shows you how to switch the colors back and forth using baking soda!
We hope this color changing drink puts a smile on your face and helps you make a little more lemonade in 2020!
