I recently had THE most fun helping the Junior League of the Woodlands host a family training event to help their kids do science throughout the summer. Originally set for May 4th – we planned a space theme and the kids LOVED it especially because of all the space events we’ve had here in Texas ranging from a total solar eclipse to seeing the ‘Northern Lights’!
Here I am kicking off the event talking about NASA, Space X, and seeing a Falcon 9 rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center. Check out our trip to Kennedy Space Center here.
We started off the day with science relay races and one of the races involved suiting up like an astronaut!
We had six booths set up with various astronaut training instructions to help train our future astronauts!
1. DIY Glove Box
Astronauts my need to touch objects from space that may be harmful to humans if handled directly or objects may be damaged if touched directly by human hands. We found the inspiration here.
2. Stars at Night
Astronauts use stars for navigation during take off and landing. The stars give them coordinates even out in space! Check out how you can even see stars during the day here.
3. Rockets
Astronauts use rockets to get into outer space. Design a rocket to be launched with a straw. What shape would make the rocket go further? Check out how we made rockets using index cards and straw here.
4. Galaxy Goo or Sunslime
One of our more popular booths was making galaxy goo – you can also make sunslime found here! Astronauts explore different properties of liquid in space. Liquids do not behave the same way when on earth – they tend to ball up into a floating sphere.
5. Gravity Lab
There is no air pressure in space and having no pressure means having no atmosphere. In that case, earth will look and feel like moon. Just rocks all over. No oceans, no vegetation, no animal life. We experimented with why this index card will stay in place because of the air pressure outside of the glass. See original post here.
6. Space Playdough and Martian ‘Rock Salt’
We even had a toddler zone area with galaxy playdough and colored rock salt. The kids loved the sensory aspect, and I loved the little astronaut figures!
Bonus Booth: Telescope to view the sun!
We had a local astronomer set up his telescope to view the sun and it’s sun spots. Sun spots are solar storms that are a lot like hurricanes here on Earth.
Take home bags: Each participant left with a take home bag with UV beads, sun art paper, and these fun DIY helicopters.
This was such an incredible team of moms that helped plan and execute this event. I was honored that they chose me to help plan such a fun day with them! By the end of the day, I was certain one of the kiddos who came to this event could one day be a future astronaut ❤️
