This year my eleven year old wants to be a mad scientist for Halloween and perform some spooky science experiments for the kids in our neighborhood. First my old science mom heart burst with joy, then I scoured our stash of science supplies to see what she could use.
We realized we could host a pretty spooktacular science show with six easy science experiments that we’ve already done here on the blog. And there is still time if your mad scientist wants to plan their own science show too! Here’s what we are going to do:
First, it’s all about the costume. When she said a ‘mad scientist’ of course I suggested a more happy natured scientist but no, my preteen is insisting on a “mad” one. I’m fairly certain this will involve an Albert Einstein wig, but here is a happier DIY costume option instead.
Then we’ll set the mood of the mad science show with some creepy things floating in jars. Check out how we used eggs floating in jars to make a spooky science lab in the past.
The next six experiments can be done with the audience or even just as a demonstration. We plan on getting everyone involved in the science fun. The first experiment is a twist on the classic Elephant Toothpaste experiment but with this you can use regular antiseptic 3% hydrogen peroxide.
All you need for the Invisible Man Hand is baking soda, vinegar, and a latex glove! So Spooky!
We suggest doing screeching ghost balloons outside because it really will sound like a screeching ghost when you get going. We also suggest a few extra balloons because kids tend to get really excited about this one and balloons do pop!
Who doesn’t love to watch a fraken-bomb bag blow up? This is an easy one with Alka Seltzer and water.
We are going to make our own “Slimer” slime for the ghost busters in our neighborhood to blast with their proton pack!
Now this next experiment I would recommend as an adult led demonstration because it involves fire. Watch as the lit candle seems to move as if by a ghostly hand!
We hope this inspires you to try out a few Halloween science experiments this year and if you are brave (or crazy like me😜) let your preteen host their own Halloween spooktacular event!
Also be sure to catch up on reading all of the Halley Harper Science Girl Extraordinaire books here. The fifth and final book about space will publish later this year! 🙌
