Every year I pop in the Halloween CD as soon as the pumpkin spice latte’s arrive at Starbucks and every year by the time it gets to Halloween night I am sick. of. Halloween. There, I said it.
This year I told myself to hold back and not deck the house with Halloween or pop in Charlie Brown movies until after October 1st despite the temptation from the slightest bit of colder weather. Now we’ve made it to the third week of October and the kids are fully versed on the Halloween classics of Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, and of course, GhostBusters. As for me, I think I can make it another week until Halloween night.
So of course when we did this experiment the first thing that came to our minds was a lyric from GhostBusters, “An invisible man, sleeping in your bed… oh! Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!” And I have to admit, the kids are right, it does look like a ghostly hand…perfect for Halloween pranks!
What you need: Latex gloves, baking soda, vinegar, water bottle, rubber band
How to do it:
- Add a tablespoon of baking soda to the glove and settle it in the finger of the glove
- Attach to the water bottle filled with half a cup of vinegar
- Secure the glove with a rubber band.
- Dump the baking soda into the bottle and watch the invisible man hand appear!!!
What’s the science? Baking soda is the base sodium bicarbonate and when mixed with vinegar creates carbon dioxide. The latex glove fills up with carbon dioxide until the reaction is complete.
I think they look great next to our kitchen Halloween science lab, yes?
Hope you have a Happy Halloween!
