Our summers usually consist of either fishing the Texas coast or driving to a Florida beach. Either way we have a slight chance of catching or seeing a shark (queue the Jaws music). So I thought the “Shark Lady”, Eugenie Clark, would be the perfect featured female scientist to kick off the summer.
Eugenie grew up in the 1930’s and a chance visit to a New York Aquarium changed her life. It was there that she began her fascination with sharks. This set her on a lifetime journey to learn more about them and was committed to changing the public perception of the misunderstood animal.
She dove to discover they rest in caves and later found out that sharks can be trained. This colorful picture book is a great way to learn more about this zoologist who defied the odds and lived out her dreams swimming with the sharks!
What do we love about Eugenie Clark?
She did not let fear drive her decisions but rather bravely became even more fascinated with her beloved sharks.
Do you have a child who is fascinated with one certain animal or thing? My kids are obsessed with lambs and lawnmowers. Who knows, maybe you have your very own zoologist in your midst.
A great activity to go along with this book is making your own ‘ocean in a bottle‘. You can find step by step instructions here. Enjoy!
