Today, as I am showing my kids science, I realize that much of what I learned as a kid I used as an engineer. The featured image above is Reddy Kilowatt, a mascot used by several power companies until the 1980’s, whose goal was to help the public ’embrace the concept of electricity’. My kids and I ran across him at the Edison Museum in Beaumont, TX and needless to say he got me all nostalgic!
Reddy reminded me when I was in 4th grade and we were challenged to make a math game. In my 9 year old opinion the game Mom and I made was THE coolest math game ever because we made our own calculator using aluminum foil and a light. (It’s a wonder I didn’t become an electrical engineer!)
What is a Electrical Engineer?
This is a branch of engineering that designs systems that use electricity. They work with generators to create energy where it may not currently exist. They design circuits to switch power on and off. Electrical engineers work with computers and digital systems for expanding communication.
Electrical engineering for kids:
Here is my all time favorite science activity that Mom and I made so many years ago – Reddy Kilowatt would be proud!😉⚡ Who doesn’t love a light to turn on when you are right?
