I had one of those parental realizations last week when my tween daughter and I volunteered at VBS together. She has become not only my biggest fan, but also my biggest critic – one minute cheering me on and the next giving me tips about my science teaching style. I find it endearing and amusing at the same time…and I love it.
But I found that there is one thing that will always make me a “cool” mom to my children and that is dry ice.
Case in point:
The one thing my 9 year old son wanted the most for his birthday party was to rent a slide – but not just any slide – a fantasmic inflatable water slide called the 15ft Tropical Breeze. (If you are local, I recommend this party rental company here.)
Thar she blows…The 15ft Tropical Breeze… and yes it is as fun to slide down as it looks 😉
So I knew if we had this epic tropical water slide, then we HAD to have a cake that would make Gilligan’s Island proud. One that looked like it was on the brink of eruption…so I found this one here – modified it for a strawberry cake – and kept the most important feature – dry ice that you can buy at your local HEB store. Isn’t she a beaut? And here she is in action…at one point one of the party guests asked me to make a volcano cake for their birthday too – to which my tween reminded all party guests that her mom doesn’t do science birthday parties (except for them) – which made me chuckle.🤣)
The Skipper loved his cake, although it didn’t quite beat out the 15 foot epic water slide, but it came in a close second. And as for my kiddos and what they think of their dear old mom? We had plenty of dry ice left over to have a grand old time at the after party playing with sublimating carbon dioxide, water, soap, and LOTS of bubbles! Proof that dry ice really does make everything cooler… even dear old Mom! 😉
