Are you looking for a unique way to decorate your home or classroom for Halloween? How about turning it into a simple Halloween science lab with eggs and vinegar? And the best part is after 24 hours you can perform your own spooky “egg-periment”!
What you need:
- Eggs
- Vinegar
- Food coloring
- Jars (we used plastic mason jars)
- Permanent markers
How to do it:
- Make Halloween faces on raw eggs with permanent marker (we opted to do washable marker for my 2 year old ;-)!)
- Add vinegar, food coloring, and spooky-faced egg in a jar. (Careful not to crack your egg!)
- Ask a question about your experiment and write down your hypothesis: Here are a few of ours. Will the faces remain on the eggshell after 24 hours? Why do bubbles form? Why do the eggs float?
What’s the science? After 24 hours the eggshell will dissolve in vinegar. For this experiment we waited for over a week so your Halloween science lab can be sitting waiting until Halloween day! The vinegar (an acid) is reacting with the calcium carbonate (a base) in the shell letting off carbon dioxide gas. This reaction ultimately dissolves the eggshell. The eggs will bounce but be careful not to squeeze them! They.will.explode.yolk!
Happy Halloween!
