We knew it was going to be a fun night when our favorite local bookstore, Village Books, asked us to use science to solve the mystery of a kidnapped bookshop dog, Oso for their Mystery and Mayhem night.
We lead our 15 detectives (age range 8-11) to solve the Who, the How, (sometimes the Ha 😜), and the Why to find the missing bookshop dog, Oso! 🧐🐾
Of course, we HAD to bring along some science equipment to help solve the mystery and wanted to share it with you:
Polygraph Lie Detector Test for Kids
We asked the suspects some pointed questions like “Did you write the ransom note” to see if they passed a lie detector test. The lie detector wasn’t super reliable but it was super fun! (Word of caution: this gadget has a shock mode that does hurt a little – so we kept it in vibrate mode and had a lot of fun asking questions to the suspects!!)
We used this microscope to test dog hair that was recovered from the suspects clothing. It was interesting to see different types, textures, and colors of dog hair!
We went to the scene of the crime and took pictures check the suspects’ alibi. Then printed our iPhone pictures on this mini photo printer! The photo paper has a sticky back so it was easy to post to our clue board.
Of course, we needed a costume and thought we looked more trust worthy with this shirt! 😉
We ended a successful Mystery and Mayhem night with cupcakes to celebrate finding Oso the bookshop dog and figuring out who the ‘dognapper” was! Village Books did an amazing job hosting this event and we had a ton of fun supporting them with our science-y gadgets! 🧐
