This year our science ornament is paying tribute to the “Christmas Star”. Today on December 21, 2020 Jupiter and Saturn will align with Earth, an event that last occurred over 800 years ago known as the Great Conjunction.
We’ve been keeping track of these two planets for several weeks and have enjoyed pulling out telescopes and star watching with friends. You can also see the Great Conjunction of these planets without a telescope, then make this ornament to remember the occasion.
What you need: metallic foil paper (I found mine here on Amazon), poster board, white paper, scissors, glue, star shapes
Here’s how you do it: First, trace stars on poster board (two big stars, two medium stars, and two little stars). Next stars on metallic foil paper. I liked to use red, green, and blue. My daughter used silver and gold (to look like real stars 😉 ). Then glue the metallic foil, poster board, and stars together sandwiching them together in this pattern – small, medium, large, large, medium, small.
It seems fitting that this year we get to see a great event in the night sky that gives us hope for the years to come.
You can find our science ornaments from years past and other Christmas science here! Merry Christmas!
