Bernoulli Bag Challenge: (and what the heck am I doing with diaper bag refills? 🤪) Do you think you can inflate a 3-4ft plastic bag with one breath?🤔

What’s the science? If you try to blow it up normally - it would take hundreds of breaths - instead try blowing a single fast moving breath and it inflates instantly! But why?

Because Daniel Bernoulli was one cool scientist that studied fluid mechanics - a course that was super challenging for me in college! Basically, he discovered that a fast moving airstream creates lower air pressure so the surrounding air will rush in to equalize the bag’s pressure and draw outside air into the bag instantly. Cool, huh?! Thanks Bernoulli - you rock 🙌

What’s the science? When the two lit matchstick heads join together the fire causes a chemical reaction that fuses their molecules together. Another great party trick to try with adult supervision 😉🔥

Flying Toilet Paper Trick 🧻✨

What’s the science? Fluid - like air - that moves at a higher speed creates a lower pressure. When blowing across the top of the toilet paper, the air underneath is at a higher pressure causing the toilet paper to lift. Blow a higher speed of air across the top of the toilet paper with a hair dryer - and the paper goes flying!

💥Crush a Can with Science…but how?

What’s the science? If you create steam in an aluminum can - by boiling a small amount of water in it - then steam will fill the can and displace the air inside the can. Then, if you turn the steam filled can upside down in ice water, the steam will quickly condense into water and the outside air pressure will crush the can!

What’s the science? It’s all about the fire triangle - for a flame you need heat, oxygen, and fuel.

When you mix baking soda and vinegar, it produces carbon dioxide which displaces oxygen - causing the flame to snuff out - leaving a few embers burning.

When you mix hydrogen peroxide and yeast the reaction produces oxygen which has a rich enough concentration to reignite the burning embers into a flame! 🔥

What’s the science? It’s air pressure! The reason why the pingpong ball appears to float in mid-air is because the higher airflow from the hairdryer creates a lower pressure than the surrounding air. This lower air pressure causes the pingpong to want to stay floating in the lower pressure!
