Per my daughters request - here is the sound of science 🎶❤️

👩‍🔬What’s the science? When you strike a tuning fork the vibration (or sound wave) travels through the air making the air more or less dense as the wave progresses. By placing a light hanging object, like a ping pong ball next to this vibration the energy is transferred into the harmonic moving of the ball.

👩‍🔬Science Fair Connection: Try different size tuning forks with different notes - does it affect the harmonic movement?

💁‍♀️Real life connection: Strike two tuning forks and place on either side of your head. How does it make you feel? Does it relax you and if so, why?

Are engineers going to become obsolete in the futu

❤️I have NEVER been able to make this work..until today! But what is the science that makes a heart drawn on a spoon with a dry erase marker float off into water?

🤓Dry erase ink is hydrophobic (water repelling) and insoluble in water so it doesn’t mix or dissolve. Add the support of water’s surface tension and there you have it - floating hearts!

💙Three clear liquids walk into a lab… only one lights up!

What’s the science? Unlike club soda and plain water, tonic water contains quinine which has a fluorescence property when exposed to UV light. When the light hits the quinine molecules, it absorbs the UV energy and releases visible blue light – a real glow up!

You can vary this activity up by asking students which cup will glow before the lights go off or experiment with other liquids to see if they will glow.

⚡️What’s the science? When the balloon is rubbed on your hair it builds up a negative charge (of extra electrons) and your hair has a positive charge (from losing electrons). Positive and negative are opposite and opposites attract. In the case of the water, the negative charge of the balloon is so powerful that it can make water molecules move toward it!

We are prepping for a weekend winter storm here and will see people salting the roads.. but what is the science?

👩‍🔬Salt lowers the freezing point of the water that it is mixed in making it harder for ice to form. So if it takes water to freeze at 32°F and below then salt water takes much colder temperatures than that to freeze and form ice!

🥶This is why the ocean doesn’t completely freeze and also why we add salt on bridges and overpasses to help have safer roads during winter weather. 🙌

🔬🐍You’ve probably seen this dissection kit everywhere…We tested the latest Dissect It “Snake” Kit so you don’t have to!

Who it’s for? 9 and under who are interested in hands on “simulated” dissection for an introduction of snake anatomy. (A nice suprise was a bonus skelton in the stomach!🦎)

While the kids “cut” (or fished) the plastic bones from the gelatin - I read about each body system and part of the anatomy to the kids. Did you know that the snake can unhinge its mouth and swallow prey up to 4 times its width!? 😵

Who it’s not for? Middle school and older biology students wanting a real dissection experience.

Can it be reused? Yes! Two additional gelatin packs are provided to do the dissection again!

Dissect It: Worth it or Skip It? Definitely worth it! 👍
