💘Valentine Cupid Science: Need to spice up your Valentine’s Day science lesson with a little help form Cupid? Check this out!

💘Do you think Cupid’s arrow can pierce the heart “balloon” without popping it? Why, yes of course. All you need is a little olive oil and to know exactly where to point the arrow and shoot!

💘What’s the science: Balloons (unlike hearts!) are made of polymers and when the balloon is inflated, it stretches the polymers thin. The area of the balloon where the polymers are least stretched (and more forgiving to a puncture by Cupid) are at the opening and at the top. Add a bit of olive oil to help the “arrow” out without popping the balloon!

This day 39 years ago had a profound impact on me as an elementary-aged kid watching the Challenger explosion on the news. As with most things that rock my world - it made it into the pages of the Halley Harper books. My fabulous illustrator @gingko.ghost did a great job capturing the characters’ excitement moments before the explosion.

I also think Reagan said it best: “The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and “slipped the surly bonds of earth’’ to “touch the face of God.’’

Writing a prequel has me strolling down memory lan

Writing a prequel has me strolling down memory lane with all my favorite memories of writing the Halley Harper Science Girl Extraordinaire series.

The prequel follows Halley and Gracelyn’s moms as they look for Halley’s Comet in 1986! Do they encounter familiar characters? Yes. Do they find out the backstory behind Camp Eureka? Yes. Do they encounter a villain? Um, yeah. Do they have an adventure worthy to tell their own grandkids in 2061 when Halley returns? You betcha.

Are you trying to help someone pick a topic for their science fair? This was always a struggle for me as a student in the 1990’s and based on ‘science fair‘ searches on She Loves Science – I suspect helping your student select a topic is a struggle for many.

So, I decided to ask my 9th grader, Allie, (a science fair aficionado) about how she chose her science fair topics and how she might give someone advice on how to go about it. I think her insights would be super helpful to your students and the last part of our Q&A is my favorite! Happy 2025! It’s been a while, so I thought I would reintroduced myself.

👩‍🔬Yes, that’s me wearing a tie-dye lab coat in a school gym behind a table with vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide.

😁Hi! I’m Tracy, a mom of three and a children’s book author with a passion for teaching science. I found - through many life twists and turns - that what I really love is making people smile with joy and science can be a great way to do that!

✨So here are some Fun Facts about Me✨

✅What first sparked your interest in science? Doing science fair projects with my mom as a kid and trying to see Halley’s Comet in 1986 in my backyard!

✅Where do you get your current science inspo from? My kids - but also old science textbooks, Pinterest, Steve Spanger, and trying to prove out fake-looking TikTok videos.

✅Where do you get your author inspo from? Thinking of all the ways to get in trouble using science 😉

✅Why did you become an engineer? I love a challenge. In fact, when someone tells me I can’t do something - I try even harder to achieve it.

✅Why did you become an author? I wanted books my kids could read about a hero that I wanted to read about when I was a kid.

🤓What was your favorite subject in school? Organic chemistry and Calculus. I’ve considered being a tutor!

✅What’s your favorite TV show? Golden Girls. If you ask, I can relate most situations in life back to a Golden Girls episode - there is a lot of wisdom (and laughter) there!

✅Who’s your favorite scientist? Richard Feynman – he was a curious character with a twinkle in his eye and gift for making science fun and thought provoking. I like to think I’m a bit like that too! 😉

✅How many countries have you been to? 10! Austria, Hungary, France, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, England, Malta, and Spain!

✅What’s the weirdest thing about you? I like cake and I love ice cream but I don’t like cake and ice cream together – yuck!

✅What’s the best thing about being an author? Definitely author visits - I love chatting with students about what their favorite science experiment is and using a bit of vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide in the process to see maybe - just maybe - I get a smile. 😉

What’s the science? Baking soda is a base and when mixed with vinegar produces carbon dioxide for that lovely fizzy effect! Happy New Year from our family to yours 💕

🎄🎅Cranberry Messages: Is it possible to unve

🎄🎅Cranberry Messages: Is it possible to unveil a hidden message with cranberries?! Why yes…you can!

What’s the science? Cranberries (like red cabbage and poinsettias) contain anthocyanin which is a natural pH indicator. Boil a few cranberries in water, strain them out, and write a secret invisible message with a base like baking soda and water. When the paper is soaked in cranberry juice - the base turns green-blue revealing your message!
