We love guacamole. We love making guacamole. We want a guacamole plant…but I guess we’ll stick with an avocado plant. And I’m not going to lie, this is not the first time the kids have said, “Hey, let’s plant that giant avocado seed.” The first time, after weeks of watching the seed sit there in water i gave up. But now I know, you’ve got to find which is the top and the bottom of the seed. Tell me I’m not the only one who has done that before! Which side is up and down? This summer is the perfect time to start since it takes 8 weeks to get a good looking plant.
What you need: avocado seed, four toothpicks, a jar of water.
How you do it: Locate the top and bottom of the seed. The bottom is flat and the top is pointed. Insert four toothpicks into a clean and dry seed so it will balance on a jar of water half-way submerged. Be sure to keep the top dry and the bottom in water at all times. And place in indirect sunlight.
I am not the most patient person, nor is my family, so around week 4 I had to rescue the avocado from the trash! But thankfully, we noticed a root and tried to be patient. After 8 weeks you’ll have your very own baby avocado tree! This was a great way to teach patience and watch the process of a seed sprouting!
